Wealth and Wellbeing via Bioenergy

Welcome to the Bioenergy Association of New Zealand web site, work with us to achieve this vision!

"Economic growth and employment built on New Zealand's capability and expertise in growing and processing wood-crops and converting organic by-products to energy, leading to new business opportunities which by 2040 supply more than 25% of the country's energy needs, including 30% of the country's transport fuels" NZ Bioenergy Strategy

New Zealand has the opportunity to achieve this!!

NZ Bioenergy Strategy

The pursuit of a consistent strategy is essential...

Following on from the Bioenergy Strategy workshop convened by BANZ and the NZ Forest Owners Association in Wellington on 9th February 2010, BANZ will be holding the following hands-on event to address the policies, opportunities and barriers that we each face in securing our own economic wealth from bioenergy over the next few years. Click here to see more.

The Bioenergy Options project led by Scion has produced a wealth of information about the bioenergy opportunities in NZ and has identified that NZ could be fully self sustaining in transport fuels from bioenergy. This work has been used as a base for development of a "picture of the bioenergy opportunities in NZ" and a NZ Bioenergy Strategy.

The NZ Strategy compares well with similar strategies being developed in Canada.

The Strategy was released on 8th September 2010. See the joint BANZ and NZFOA Press Release here.

The NZ Bioenergy Strategy follows a similar strategy developed by the Canadian forest industry and referred to in a recent presentation in Auckland by Rory Gilsenan of National Resources Canada. Click here to download

BANZ Bioenergy Projects Directory
April 2012

BANZ is developing a Database of Bioenergy Projects across New Zealand.  The database is searchable and will present information similar to other leading international bioenergy databases such as http://swentec.se/en/Start/find_cleantech/

The database should be available in April 2012. BANZ is now seeking projects to list and invites you to complete a project profile that can be stored in the database.

The project profile template will be available soon.

New Zealand Energy Strategies 2011 and Bioenergy
August 2011

The NZ Energy Strategies set out the Government’s objectives with respect to energy and highlight the important role that Government sees for bioenergy in New Zealand’s future energy mix. This note summarises the objectives for bioenergy (biofuel, biomass and alternative fuel) as set out in the strategies and the means for achievement.

Preliminary Analysis of the Economic Impact of the New Zealand Bioenergy Strategy
August 2011

BANZ* contracted BERL Economics to undertake a preliminary economic analysis of the baseline scenario set out in the Bioenergy Strategy. This preliminary economic analysis was aimed at providing:-

> An analysis of the economic rationality of the vision targets set out in the assumptions of the NZ Bioenergy Strategy - essentially a 'macro-economic' analysis; and,

> An analysis at a macro level of the economic drivers for primary players seeking to pursue the opportunities set out in the NZ Bioenergy Strategy, the optimal timing of elements for implementation of the strategy, and the externalities deriving from primary activities.

The analysis shows that implementation of the strategy can by 2040

> increase real GDP by $6.1 billion
> increase employment by an extra 27,000 full-time equivalent positions, and
> improve the NZ trade balance by more than $1.9 billion.

* BANZ acknowledges the financial assistance for this project from NZTE.
The analysis of the report is available here.
New Zealand Bioenergy Mission to Canada post-mission review
12 - 20 May 2011

The NZTE led Bioenergy Mission to Canada undertaken during May 2011 visited people and sites across Canada who were either producing liquid biofuels from wood or were in an advanced stage of commercialising specific technology. The Mission included representatives of the NZ forest, wood processing and bioenergy sectors who were actively considering the opportunities for investment in the production of advanced biofuels (biodiesel, bioethanol) from New Zealand's vast quantities of wood, much of which as harvest or process residues may currently be either wasted or have low value uses.

A Technology and Capability Gap Analysis and Action Plan for Implementation
(August 2011)
BANZ has undertaken an analysis into the gaps that need to be addressed if we are to achieve implementation of the Bioenergy Strategy. From that analysis a list of recommended actions has been developed and is now being addressed by the BANZ Board and the Interest Groups.

A copy of the full report can be viewed and downloaded from the Members Only page here.

If you are interested in identifying priority actions for funding you should contact the relevant Interest Group conveners here.

Biodiesel Grants Scheme Success
BANZ report (February 2011)

After just over a year of operation and despite challenging economic times, the Biodiesel Grants Scheme has kick-started interest in biofuels in New Zealand and has a growing and loyal following. The BANZ Liquid Biofuel Interest Group developed this progress report on the Biodiesel grants Scheme to highlight not only the success of the Scheme itself, but to promote the many positives associated with the use of biodiesel and the need now to confirm the extension of the Scheme beyond June 2012 and give investors the confidence they need to invest in the biodiesel sector.

Bioenergy Wins Big at the 2010 EECA Awards - Bioenergy makes strong running in 2010 EECA Awards

The 2010 EECA Awards have been dominated by bioenergy in various forms - showing an increasing interest from Kiwi businesses in new forms of renewable energy. In total, 14 out of the 32 projects short listed in the awards included at least a component of bioenergy in their entries whether biogas, biodiesel or wood energy - a record showing.

Government Scenario shows that a 3-fold increase in the use of bioenergy is possible

The Ministry of Economic Development has released its latest scenario of the New Zealand Energy Outlook. The New Zealand Energy Outlook present long-term forecasts of energy supply, demand, prices and energy sector greenhouse gas emissions. The Change Gear Scenario sets out a future energy scenario for New Zealand that looks at the implications of how New Zealand could reduce its reliance on imported oil - principally through increased uptake of bioenergy. The scenario builds on a Reference Scenario released in September last year that presented a "business-as-usual" case for energy in New Zealand. The Reference Scenario highlighted several challenges if New Zealand continues along its current path, including a continuing dependence on imported oil, the prospect of further electricity price rises, and increasing energy sector greenhouse gas emissions.

Download a copy of the article covering this new scenario. Detailed data tables can be accessed free of charge on MED's web site at www.med.govt.nz/energyoutlook.

The Changing Gear Scenario is very similar to the BANZ scenario on which the NZ Bioenergy Strategy has been based. Both sets of analysis show that NZ could have around 25% of its energy sourced from bioenergy by 2040. This would reflect a doubling in the use of bioenergy for heat and 30% of transport fuel coming from biofuels by 2040. Export of wood fuel and biofuels would be additional to that.

The Association

Who are BANZ?

Veins on a leafThe Bioenergy Association of New Zealand (BANZ) has been established to promote and coordinate the development of a bioenergy industry in New Zealand. BANZ provides a central focus point for liaison with Government agencies, the dissemination of information amongst the industry and long-term positioning of bioenergy into New Zealand's energy system.

Members include anyone with a commercial interest in bioenergy - wood processors, foresters, energy suppliers, energy researchers, consultants, manufacturers and investors. Activities are focused around wood energy, biogas and liquid biofuels.

Mission and Vision

What is BANZ trying to achieve?

The mission of BANZ is to:

  • Encourage the utilisation of New Zealand's abundant biomass resources and provide renewable energy in the form of heat, power and transport fuels in a sustainable and cost effective manner.
  • Promote to the wider community the environmental benefits of Bioenergy including greenhouse gas mitigation and waste avoidance.
  • To facilitate implementation of commercial bioenergy projects
