Wellington, 12th February 2010
Bioenergy Association of New Zealand says the time is right for a National Bioenergy Strategy.

Bioenergy is a potentially significant contributor to the national energy mix in New Zealand. At present however the resource is largely untapped and the potential unrealised. All this is set to change however with an industry lead initiative to develop a proposed National Bioenergy Strategy. The Bioenergy Association of NZ (BANZ) says by 2040 New Zealand's bioenergy sector could be supplying more than 25% of the country's energy needs, including 30% of the country's transport fuels" ... read more >>

"Development of an NZ Bioenergy Strategy

Held on 9th February 2010 in Wellington

The Bioenergy Options project led by Scion have produced a wealth of information about the bioenergy opportunities in NZ and have identified that NZ could be fully self-sustaining in transport fuels from bioenergy. This work has been used as a base for development of a "picture of the bioenergy opportunities" and a draft strategy. These were discussed at a workshop convened by BANZ and the NZ Forest Owners Association in Wellington on 9th February 2010.

Key to the development of a strategy that can be used by investors, land owners, foresters, territorial authorities, researchers and government agencies is an agreement on the priority activities and development of a consistent approach that builds on the existing sector activities in wood energy, biogas and transport biofuels. 8.5% of total NZ consumer energy is already produced from bioenergy sources so it is not an insubstantial industry. It is now time to develop a strategy for growing that further.

The meeting on the 9th February heard from the Bioenergy Options researchers and then focused on the way forward. It was a workshop for contributions from all attendees and not a talking heads conference.
