Strategies for Growing the NZ Bioenergy Market

Work with us to achieve this vision

"A TECHNOLOGY AND CAPABILITY GAP ANALYSIS AND ACTION PLAN FOR IMPLEMENTATION",
August 2011.
BANZ has undertaken an analysis into the gaps that need to be addressed if we are to achieve implementation of the Bioenergy Strategy. From that analysis a list of recommended actions has been developed and is now being addressed by the BANZ Board and the Interest Groups.

Download the summary report here.

A copy of the full report can be viewed and downloaded from the Members Only page here.

If you are interested in identifying priority actions for funding you should contact the relevant Interest Group conveners here.

"PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE NEW ZEALAND BIOENERGY STRATEGY",
August 2011.

BANZ* contracted BERL Economics to undertake a preliminary economic analysis of the baseline scenario set out in the Bioenergy Strategy. This preliminary economic analysis was aimed at providing:-

  • An analysis of the economic rationality of the vision targets set out in the assumptions of the NZ Bioenergy Strategy - essentially a 'macro-economic' analysis; and,
  • An analysis at a macro level of the economic drivers for primary players seeking to pursue the opportunities set out in the NZ Bioenergy Strategy, the optimal timing of elements for implementation of the strategy, and the externalities deriving from primary activities.

The analysis shows that implementation of the strategy can by 2040

  • increase real GDP by $6.1 billion
  • increase employment by an extra 27,000 full-time equivalent positions, and
  • improve the NZ trade balance by more than $1.9 billion

The analysis of the report is available here.

"NZ BIOENERGY MISSION TO CANADA POST-MISSION REVIEW",
12 - 20 May 2011.
The NZTE led Bioenergy Mission to Canada undertaken during May 2011 visited people and sites across Canada who were either producing liquid biofuels from wood or were in an advanced state of commercialising specific technology. The Mission included representatives of the NZ forest, wood processing and bioenergy sectors who were actively considering the opportunities for investment in the production of advanced biofuels (biodiesel, bioethanol) from New Zealand's vast quantities of wood, much of which as harvest or process residues may currently be either wasted or have low value uses. IEA Bioenergy

New Zealand is a member of the IEA Bioenergy Task 39 "Commercialising 1st- and 2nd- Generation Liquid Biofuels from Biomass". Scion is the NZ representative on the Task group.

The Task group brings together leading researchers, government officials and industry pioneers in a continuing bid to successfully introduce biofuels for transportation into the commercial marketplace. The Group's activities are organised into two subtasks, which include the technical challenges of 'second-generation' biofuel production, as well as the market, policy and implementation issues that must be addressed in commercialisation of all biofuels. It commissions a series of authoritative reports in its areas of interest.

Wellington, 31st October 2011
Biofuels ready to ensure energy supply.

With the disruption to energy supply throughout the North Island due to the leak in the Taranaki gas pipeline, businesses should look at the alternatives available to them for heat production. In particular, locally sourced wood fuel which can ensure security of energy supply. New Zealand’s producers of wood fuel can increase production throughout the country and overcome the problems of businesses being tied to a single and now aging gas supply network.   Read more here

Bioenergy Association of New Zealand says the time is right for a National Bioenergy Strategy.

Bioenergy is a potentially significant contributor to the national energy mix in New Zealand. At present however the resource is largely untapped and the potential unrealised. All this is set to change however with an industry lead initiative to develop a proposed National Bioenergy Strategy. The Bioenergy Association of NZ (BANZ) says by 2040 New Zealand's bioenergy sector could be supplying more than 25% of the country's energy needs, including 30% of the country's transport fuels" ... read more >>

Sustainability Victoria Sustainability Victoria's key role is to implement Victorian government policy. They work with business, the community, individuals and the government to achieve meaningful outcomes in greenhouse gas abatement, energy efficiency, renewable energy and the smarter use of resources.

While all Australian States have Departments which provide assistance and guidance to reduce energy consumption and the Federal Government also provides lots of information, the ResourceSmart website from Sustainability Victoria has some very good resources for businesses.
