About the webinar

There are a number of organisations who think they have a waste material that they could process to biogas/Biomethane but not sure:

  • if they have enough waste?
  • can generate enough gas from the waste available?
  • how they’d convert it to biogas for their own use or upgrade to biomethane for sale and distribution through the gas distribution pipeline system? and
  • if there is a business case for further development?

The presentation will examine typical case studies and show a process of evaluation methods and tools to address:

  • Why biogas & biomethane?
  • How I make biogas & biomethane?
  • What feedstocks are suitable?
  • Technology selection.
  • What do the finances look like – feedstock cost, CAPEX, OPEX?

There are many opportunities for recycling organic residues into a gaseous fuel and while this is done in other regions, New Zealand is just in its infancy on this journey.

This presentation is aimed at organisations who have organic residues from processing operations which could be recycled into energy for either use as fuel in their own boilers, generators or upgrading into biomethane for sale.  With a focus on aspects to consider when assessing a biogas/biomethane opportunity, this presentation is to help new advisers into the sector or provide a refresher to more experienced practitioners.

About the presenters

Jeff Zimmer imageJeff Zimmer is a professional engineer with over 13 years of experience in natural gas utility and renewable gas projects focused on project management, project development and business development.  Jeff has extensive experience providing technical, commercial and business strategy within the utility and renewables sector.  His experience includes development of RNG projects in Canada from initial siting, feedstock supply, offtake and interconnection contacts through to final investment decision.

Dr Daniel Carey, PhD has over 15 years of experience in water treatment, anaerobic digestion and renewable energy.  Dan has performed feedstock analysis for multiple industries, digester troubleshooting and supported the operation of a community anaerobic digestor.

Dan developed a tool to assist organisations quickly evaluate various feedstock mixes to generate preliminary designs quickly and efficiently.  The highly customisable tool allows option evaluation and optimisation developing mass balances, equipment lists, CAPEX and operational costs.
