Taranaki Biogas Collective launches Regional Biogas Initiative

The Taranaki Biogas Collective has been established to explore how biogas can support regional wellbeing through local jobs, energy resilience, environmental stewardship, and new economic opportunities within a circular bioeconomy.

Guided by a "For Taranaki, by Taranaki" kaupapa, the Collective is developing a regional anaerobic digestion (AD) pilot plant and associated laboratory services. The initiative aims to demonstrate how biogas can strengthen energy sovereignty, reduce emissions, retain valuable bioresources within the region, support local services, and create lasting benefits for future generations.

Founding contributors include TIS, Taranaki Applied Innovation Centre, Armatec Environmental, and Elemental Group. The Collective welcomes collaboration from across the biogas value chain, including feedstock providers, energy and gas companies, industry organisations, councils, iwi, hapū, and community groups interested in advancing a sustainable bioeconomy for Taranaki.
