Conference: Bioenergy - a critical part of the path to carbon neutrality
This virtual IEA Bioenergy conference will be held as a series of online sessions spread over two weeks between 29 November and 9 December 2021
While New Zealand and Australia are expanding the use of bioenergy as each transitions from using fossil fuels there is a lot which can be learnt from the experiences of other countries. This conference is a series of sessions on topics very relevant to the Australasian bioenergy and biofuels sector.
The IEA Roadmap ‘Net Zero Emissions by 2050’ recognizes bioenergy as an important option, representing 18% of total energy supply in 2050, and playing a major role to reach carbon neutrality of the global energy system, either through the direct replacement of fossil fuels, or to offset emissions indirectly through the combined use of bioenergy with carbon capture and storage/utilisation. An increasing role of biomass/biofuels would be needed in industry, transport as well as heat and electricity production. The conference sessions will consider latest developments and prospects of biomass/bioenergy in different sectors, as well as sustainable feedstock mobilisation and the role of biomass in a circular bio-economy.
The conference sessions will discuss these main topics:
- Implications of COP26 on bioenergy implementation
- Feedstock mobilisation / Sustainability governance
- Transport biofuels
- The potential of drop-in biofuels to decarbonise aviation
- Green gas perspectives
- Waste and residue valorisation in a circular economy
- Industrial symbiosis and biorefineries in a circular economy
- Circular economy and industry
- Bioenergy in the energy system
