Supporting the Green Transition via the EU Industrial Strategy: Opportunities and Challenges for Bioeconomy, through Bio-Based Industrial Systems and Biotechnology in the EU
This report examines how bio-based industrial systems and biotechnology can accelerate the EU’s green transition and industrial strategy.
It focuses on three pillars: (1) mapping and analysing over 150 bio-based industrial systems, including 22 case studies of successful business models; (2) assessing biomass availability, trade dependencies and future supply–demand dynamics; and (3) identifying opportunities and challenges for biotechnology and biomanufacturing.
Findings reveal strong market potential—EU bioeconomy value added reached EUR 812 billion in 2022—but persistent barriers such as high capital costs, skills shortages and fragmented regulations.
