Wood Fibre Futures

Overview The New Zealand Government is committed to transitioning the country’s economy to net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Forestry and wood processing is seen as a priority area in which to assist in achieving these objectives. Trees offset emissions in the short to medium term, and woody biomass can be turned into products that are high value and able to replace emissions intensive products in the medium to long term. In recognition of this potential, the government initiated the New Zealand Wood Fibre Futures Project.

The project focuses on pathways for woody biomass to decarbonise the economy, and to identify specific opportunities or barriers to investment in the commercialisation and uptake of products made from woody biomass.
