New Zealand's sustainable biomass supply - without carbon debt

There is frequent commentary in the media on the carbon debt associated with the use of forest derived biomass for bioenergy.  The implication is that there is a carbon debt that lasts for decades.  Much of this commentary comes from Europe and other northern hemisphere sources where much of the biomass is sourced from natural or managed natural forests.

The presentation will cover why New Zealand’s forest derived biomass is different, why we have an inherently sustainable cut (volume of harvested biomass) and why the carbon debt from wood from plantation forests used for fuel has been at or about 1 year since around 1991.

About the presenter

Peter has worked in forest management, logging, and bioenergy research in various roles since 1978.

Currently employed at the Bioeconomy Science Institute (BSI) as a scientist/project manager, in Scion Group’s Bioenergy programme, working on biomass resource analysis, solid fuels, industrial symbiosis and techno-economic analysis of bioenergy and wood processing.
